{"id":1338,"date":"2015-02-27T00:00:32","date_gmt":"2015-02-27T08:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/192.168.3.4\/?p=1338"},"modified":"2018-01-09T06:49:49","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T14:49:49","slug":"supplemental-observation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cloudacm.com\/?p=1338","title":{"rendered":"Augmented reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Introduction &#8211; seeing what is relative<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This will be more of an introduction on the topic of augmented reality.\u00a0 It will be platform independent, but it may make reference to various types of devices.\u00a0 Basically it is creating a visual experience that is a combination the natural world and digital.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9fCEGfG_FQg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The concept of enhancing a visual object, in real time, with detail is the idea behind augmented reality. \u00a0Its easier to explain with application that to describe it outright. \u00a0Grocery shops offer something similar by placing signs above isles so shoppers know were to locate items. \u00a0This is a physical reality. \u00a0The shopper is viewing the signs with the naked eye, or with corrective lens, but nothing more.<\/p>\n<p>With augmented reality, the same shop can place a device like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IBeacon\" target=\"_blank\">iBeacon<\/a> near products. \u00a0Shoppers could use a phone camera or other visual device to view the product with the enhanced information. \u00a0The shopper sees\u00a0the\u00a0real item with the additional details, this is augmented reality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Purpose &#8211; that deer in the headlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It seems like something from a science fiction movie, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/gajitz.com\/target-identified-darpas-terminator-like-vision-helmet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Terminator<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.touchmyapps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/review-predators-4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Predator<\/a>.\u00a0 But the ability to enhance eye sight is a critical function for in a high risk environment.\u00a0 Firefighters, police, and pilots can find themselves in a spot where visual cues can make the difference between life or death.\u00a0 At a certain point it will be more efficient to have cars that can &#8220;see in the dark&#8221;, than line and maintain street lights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details &#8211; some ideas out in the field <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NnuUzYcUNvE\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a> shows how the producers of a film used AR to market it to the public. \u00a0Live background video was displayed with action scenes overlaid. \u00a0This AR visual effect engaged the viewers and projected a\u00a0sense of being present in the scene.<\/p>\n<p>A more practical use of AR would be translation. \u00a0Word Lens is a smart phone app that will translate text in real time using the camera. \u00a0The viewer can have items display text to a language they can understand.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h2OfQdYrHRs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another application is driving assistance. \u00a0This is gradually becoming a standard feature in newer cars. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ionroad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">iOnRoad<\/a> is a smart phone app that extends this feature to older cars drivers. \u00a0It will warn drivers of object distance and road weave.<\/p>\n<p>These are\u00a0just a few\u00a0possible applications of AR. \u00a0This post will go through other scenarios and uses for AR<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relations &#8211; some pi is fitting<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The raspberry pi platform has the ability to connect with a 1080p camera. \u00a0Using python based OpenCV, which\u00a0is native to the raspberry pi&#8217;s operating system, AR is possible. \u00a0The camera module port and support for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/documentation\/usage\/webcams\/README.md\" target=\"_blank\">mobius cameras connected to the USB ports<\/a> offers a simple option.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary &#8211; lets see what we can do with this<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the following posts, I&#8217;ll be expanding on AR and implementing it with the RPi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction &#8211; seeing what is relative This will be more of an introduction on the topic of augmented reality.\u00a0 It will be platform independent, but it may make reference to various types of devices.\u00a0 Basically it is creating a visual experience that is a combination the natural world and digital.
