{"id":1617,"date":"2014-12-19T00:00:37","date_gmt":"2014-12-19T08:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/192.168.3.4\/?p=1617"},"modified":"2018-01-09T06:49:50","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T14:49:50","slug":"true-rpi-infra-red-imaging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cloudacm.com\/?p=1617","title":{"rendered":"True RPi Infra Red Imaging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Introduction &#8211; It can start with an email<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this case, it did. \u00a0The folks over at Sparkfun sent me product offering email that had an interesting breakout, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sparkfun.com\/products\/13233\" target=\"_blank\">FLIR Dev Kit<\/a>. \u00a0This is essentially a camera module that senses in the infra red spectrum. \u00a0They mention some details about the breakout on their website, so go check it out if you want more details.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Purpose &#8211;\u00a0They have an app for that&#8230;no, seriously they do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A few months back I had a coworker mention that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flir.com\/flirone\/\" target=\"_blank\">FLIR offered a camera module<\/a> that attached to a iphone. \u00a0It turns out that the Sparkfun dev kit is that same sensor. \u00a0The resolutions of the module isn&#8217;t ground shaking at 80 x 60. \u00a0However, having the ability to provide a FLIR overlay to the \u00a0higher resolution iphone camera\u00a0was what made it interesting.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aODjxHTV3ks\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nFrom the looks of the sample imaging, OpenCV edge detection of\u00a0the high res visible light camera can be\u00a0used as a transparent overlay onto the dimmed baseline image. \u00a0Then the image from the FLIR is layered on top, allowing the colors to provide a heat map.<\/p>\n<p>This is one possible application of a low resolution FLIR sensor. \u00a0It&#8217;s a clever way to get high res results from limited hardware.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Detail &#8211; From the fellow that did the Kinect teardown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you really want to get more details, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electricstuff.co.uk\/lepton.html\" target=\"_blank\">this guy spells it out<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m still processing the new offering from Sparkfun to give something more. \u00a0But if this soft of stuff interests you, then I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll find the time well spent.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SKLnGhwWtoc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The real benefit is alot of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pureengineering.com\/projects\/lepton\" target=\"_blank\">folks have put in the leg work<\/a>, making it easier for the rest of us tagging along\u00a0to get it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relations &#8211; Sensor arrays and\u00a0aggregate data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s entirely possible to take a few of these FLIR sensors and make a bees eye array. \u00a0Combine the data from the array with other sensors and some magic can happen. \u00a0It&#8217;s too early for me to go into what that might be, but similar efforts have been demonstrated before.<\/p>\n<p>I will leave at least one tidbit, adding GPS tagging with the results could allow <a href=\"http:\/\/cartodb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CartoDB<\/a> mapping to be done in a more refined way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary &#8211; The nearIR stuff is cool, but FLIR is hot<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a new image sensor for your embedded project offered by Sparkfun. \u00a0The tiny 80 x 60 thermal imager runs for roughly $350. \u00a0This device can be integrated with other sensors and processed to do some amazing things. \u00a0I&#8217;ll be interested to see in the months to follow what arrives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction &#8211; It can start with an email In this case, it did. \u00a0The folks over at Sparkfun sent me product offering email that had an interesting breakout, the FLIR Dev Kit. \u00a0This is essentially a camera module that senses in the infra red spectrum. \u00a0They mention some details about the breakout on their website, so go check it out if you want more details.
