{"id":882,"date":"2014-05-11T18:15:46","date_gmt":"2014-05-11T18:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/192.168.3.4\/?p=882"},"modified":"2018-01-09T06:49:38","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T14:49:38","slug":"to-root-or-not-to-root","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cloudacm.com\/?p=882","title":{"rendered":"To Root or not to Root"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One item that isn&#8217;t clear to me is the business of rooting an android phone. \u00a0On my phone,\u00a0it plays the default\u00a0animation. \u00a0I wanted to see if I could change it and from what I could tell, I could. \u00a0I had found several different methods to create and use custom animations, but they all require root access. \u00a0This video was specific to my model of phone.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dIP43-NcrFY\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What gets me is the amount of good faith I have to give to these apps. \u00a0Some root apps work by finding a fault with the phone and exploiting it to get root level enabled. \u00a0That seems\u00a0insane to me. \u00a0 Digging around I found some interesting takes on this whole rooting thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act rooting is illegal in the United States except by exemption. The U.S. Copyright Office currently grants phones an exemption to this law &#8220;at least through 2015&#8243;\u2026\u201d<br \/>\n&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Android_rooting\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What a shocker! \u00a0Consumers of hardware have limited access to what they own because these devices are capable of manipulating data that will result in the loss of intellectual property. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crippleware\">Crippleware<\/a> is nothing new to me, I had seen it put in practice as a consequence of the MP3 format. \u00a0It was music sharing that changed everything and made dumbing down mainstream.<\/p>\n<p>How about features that protect the consumer? \u00a0What happens if you loose your hardware? \u00a0On the surface smart phones aren&#8217;t that capable, resulting in the need to introduce new laws.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;Those caught and convicted refer to it as apple picking, because it\u2019s such low fruit and it\u2019s so easy to do and we want to make sure that convenience is taken away.\u201d&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.sfgate.com\/nov05election\/2014\/05\/08\/kill-switch-bill-gets-second-life-with-senate-approval\/\">San Francisco Gate Blog<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What does this mean? \u00a0Bend the rules and take a chance if you want to make your phone do what you want it to. \u00a0If something goes wrong, you&#8217;re out of luck. \u00a0Otherwise, take it for face value and accept what it has been preprogrammed to do.<\/p>\n<p>Adam\u00a0Outler at XDA Developers made this instruction video on how to right a root app.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jmfvX8zvsS0\" width=\"240\" height=\"135\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One item that isn&#8217;t clear to me is the business of rooting an android phone. \u00a0On my phone,\u00a0it plays the default\u00a0animation. \u00a0I wanted to see if I could change it and from what I could tell, I could. \u00a0I had found several different methods to create and use custom animations, but they all require root access. \u00a0This video was specific to my model of phone.
