How far will this go?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It started with a book&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apress Publishing sent me an email a few days ago with an offer on a book.\u00a0 The title was &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apress.com\/9781430259299\">Computer Vision Metrics<\/a>&#8221; and they had a promotion for members for a free download.\u00a0 The description looked interesting so I went ahead and downloaded it.\u00a0 The content is intense, with my not having covered the material in an introductory fashion before.\u00a0 A fifth of the book contains references that branch out further for the reader intent on doing some additional research.\u00a0 The Intel Labs in Seattle grabbed my attention.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Right under my nose&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It turns out that Intel funds a lab at the University of Washington.\u00a0 They have a website titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/ils.intel-research.net\/projects\/rgbd\">RGB-D: Techniques and usages for Kinect style depth cameras<\/a>&#8220;, which is was clear and to the point.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t have to second guess what was going on.\u00a0 Range imaging, human input, and robotic automation were demonstrated using <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Range_imaging\">range imaging<\/a> technology.\u00a0 The references to Kinect cameras gravitated my attention toward the hardware side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Near IR, pun intented&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are several manufacturers of the Kinect style depth cameras.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.softkinetic.com\/en-us\/products\/depthsensecameras.aspx\">SoftKinetic<\/a> stood out for me, mainly because they<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s5M09Lq7FzU\"> demonstrated<\/a> the product clearly.\u00a0 But it doesn&#8217;t stop there, the price range was reasonable for a technology still new to the public.\u00a0 Then I found a teardown.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want to watch it, I had to.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H4lVbPEYyg8\" width=\"240\" height=\"135\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hey, isn&#8217;t Spring Quarter over!?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, I&#8217;ll be taking a bit of a break over the next couple of months.\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to continue to build the sensor helmet and post about the project as it progresses.\u00a0 I will also attempt some bridge work of projects and material I&#8217;ve covered the past couple of years.\u00a0 For the most part, I think having some fun this Summer will be key.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A parting note&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Somethings bear repeating, because the memory of the experience\u00a0fades with each cumulative day that is bound by routine. \u00a0Any individual, group, or culture that fears the stigma of failure and suppresses\u00a0it with staunch dismissive insistence will only foster\u00a0failure. \u00a0That was what I walked away with after watching this.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/97129318?color=1b4b82\" width=\"240\" height=\"135\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/97129318\">Major Malfunction: Revisiting Challenger<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/newyorktimes\">The New York Times &#8211;
